Glass negatives paint historical picture of Brome region-Brome County Historical Society launches new exhibition

The Brome County Historical Society (BCHS) will launch a new exhibition to kick off its summer season titled Wood & Wheeler. The exhibition celebrates the works of Sally Wood (1857-1928) and John Wheeler (1864-1933), two Brome County photographers, and it will be open to the public from May 28, 2021 to April 22, 2022.

In 2016, the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec provided funding to the BCHS to preserve the glass negatives of Wood and Wheeler after recognizing their historical importance. “We rediscovered negatives that has been in our collection for decades at that point,” said Jeremy Reeves, curator at the BCHS. “We knew that we wanted to do something with them, we just had to figure out what that was.”

The Wood & Wheeler exhibition was initially planned for 2020 but the pandemic put the project on hold. “When we realized that we wouldn’t be able to open it because of the pandemic, we decided to go back to the drawing board.”
