Emmanuel United Church in Cowansville has a Ukrainian campaign underway

By Louise Smith

For the month of March and until the end of April a fundraising campaign for Ukraine is underway at Emmanuel United Church in Cowansville. Cardboard “Bears of Peace” are being given for a suggested donation of $2. All proceeds will go towards a credited charity directly involved in Ukraine.
The “Bears of Peace” are decorated with the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag. On the back of each bear are the words of peace in English, French, and Ukrainian and the Ukrainian flag is painted on the back.
The bears will be at the back of the church each Sunday until the end of April and they will rest during the week in the office. The office hours at Emmanuel United Church, 203 rue Principale, in Cowansville are 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays. The financial goal is $400
The bears can be hung from a hook in a window or used as a bookmark or displayed in many ways. It is but a small way to make a difference in these terrible times.
Emmanuel United Church is also home to the Welcome Project. It is run by a committee of volunteers having Vicky Duke as one of the primary leaders. Clean linens and new pillows are given to refugees who come to the area. In the past quite a few Nigerian refugees came to our area. During Covid times, the number of refugees has diminished, but with Granby and Sherbrooke being designated as sites for Ukrainian refugees, the Welcome Project will be there to service anyone who is of need. Anyone wanting more information can call the church office, 450-263-0204, and they will be put in touch with Vicky.
